Crypt Show

We held the MFA Wimbledon Student exhibition at the Crypt gallery in the second academic year. In this exhibition, I feel that each team is more well-planned and more elaborate in terms of the preparation. At first, I did want to join the design team, but due to the fact that PV team need more help at that time, so I was selected to be one of the PV team again. We team has four people, and under the leadership of Andrea, I came to understand that it is essential to communicate with the teammates in advance about the time period during which student is on duty. Furthermore, because of the different workloads and participation of each teammates in this project, the work time in the latter part of the schedule needs to be arranged as well.

At the night of private view, I worked with Andrea, LuLu and Josh as bar staff all night. The job is to prepare food and drink, distribute leaflets for visitors, collect donations and final cleaning of bar, waste sorting and discarding. All of these things seem trivial and simple, but due to the large number of visitors that night, we had a huge workload. Midway through the work my partner felt dissatisfied with some guests, so I learnt and tried to communicate with them as a coordinator. It makes me feel satisfied and happy when people say thank you to me or praise my job, because I have a feeling that my existence in this team is valuable and the work I did is needed.

Overall, this job is very helpful to me in enhancing my ability in language communication. It also makes me realize that every minute job is necessary, and good teamwork can maintain the work efficiency and stability.

LIFE IN SHOE BOX

This show was the first external exhibition we cooperated as the art students in the MFA first year, which was held at Holdrons Arcade Peckham from the 26th to the 29th of April 2017.

Except being one artist of the show, I also took part in the Private View team. In this team, our work is mainly responsible for the purchase of the evening's food, bar management, guiding visitors into the exhibition hall, and prompting visitors to write down comments on our exhibition in the guest book. By cooperating with team members throughout the whole night, I realized the importance of this job, we should share out the work to make the atmosphere of private view more exciting and comfortable, to provide visitors with services so that they have a better viewing experience. In addition, I found that I could overcome shyness and language problems to communicate with most of the visitors.

17m2

17m2 is the second exhibition for most MFA students. In this exhibition, every person got simpler work to do compared with the exhibition “Life in a Shoebox”. This is because the exhibition was held in UAL’s building, which made the work management and communication more flexible and convenient. My work is also simpler than that of the first exhibition. I was mainly responsible for private views. Audiences of the exhibition were mainly students from UAL. We shared many ideas on the works of this exhibition, and I also considered the influences of exhibition space on the exhibition effect.

Canary wharf

In this semester, first year Wimbledon MFA students joined collaborative project in Canary wharf. At that day, all of our classmates are divided into several groups to write a proposal for an assumed project for the Barbican centre. In my view, the Barbican certre is quite large and gorgeous. The existence of this space makes people's lives more diverse, people can get pleasure here. But in the meantime, this is a place where individuals feel tired and lonely. After visiting this community, I worked with Ada, Yuyang and Gina to discussion and write the proposal for this site:

“The idea is about a thought or a momentary ideology and people around the big city with history and diverse community but it is still isolated by the individual from deep inside and human done through huge and small canvases.”

The four of us have very diverse practice. The proposal that we have written in barbican centre was not comprehensive enough to engaged with all our practices.

Art Parlour

On the Thursday of week sixteen, all of our classmates went to the Space Studio for Art Parlour, which hosted by Karen David and Adam Dix, with guest speakers Fiona Furness and Karen Davies. In which four artist talked about how they continued their art perspective after graduating from school, then we visited Hugh Mendes’s studio. After that, I worked with my group member to  discuss and prepare for our group presentation about what we have discovered about ‘Life After Art School’.In our group presentation, we decided that each team member elaborated on one thing what they thought was about what the student should continue to do after graduating from art school.

In my view, it is quite useful for artist to work sketchbook and keep diary. Inspiration might be disappeared and memories might be forgotten, but if artists have diary and sketchbook, they can always get some new feelings and creative ideas whenever they review these notes.

Through this experience, I realized that if art students want to be an outstanding artist after graduating school, we must always be humble and diligent to study. In fact, there is not one way to be an artist, and the value of the works of art is not only present in the museum or gallery. We should continue our research and balance our life and work. In addition, we should keep in touch with the art circle, it is our most valued network.
